Tara:  Here’s something for Mislabeled, perhaps?

Rachel:  Or this?

:)
Tara:  Oh wow, this is WAY better than the College Republicans ‘Call Me Maybe’ cover.

Too Legit to Quit

21 Aug

Legitimate.

I really fucking hate that word sometimes. As a young person, as a woman, as the daughter of a teenaged-mother, and as a supporter of equality, I’m tired of having people judge whether my life, my choices, and my words are good and true enough to be recognized.

It’s hard for our generation to find a job when we’re told that our volunteering, our online and computer skills, our community and campus organizing aren’t “legitimate experience.”

It’s hard for women to walk down the street without being harassed and hard for survivors of sexual assault and rape to come forward when told that their words and experiences don’t constitute “legitimate rape” or a “legitimate complaint.” Surely, they were asking for the unwanted attention, the assault.

It’s hard to listen to conservative rants about “family values” and the havoc that single mothersand marriage equality would bring to the American family unit. My parents were 17 and not yet married when I was born; I was – as they say – an “illegitimate child.” Fuck that; my parents have been married for 24 years and my family is incredibly close. And my LGBTQ friends aren’t leading legitimate lives? Bullshit. They’re people and they love who they love so get the hell over it.

And these internet trolls complaining about “emotional outbursts” in regards to attacks on young people, on women, on the LGBTQ community? You’re damn right that we’re having emotional outbursts; these attacks are personal. I can find statistics and studies to back up my opinions, but you’re not going to listen to me anyway, so whatever.  Also, we’re fucking human beings. We have emotions. Reacting emotionally shouldn’t carry the stigma that it does; I guess since emotion is so typically associate with the feminine, it’s way too much for your patriarchy-loving minds to take.
Do you want to get pissed when I incessantly post articles about and reactions to Rep. Akin’s heinous comments? Do you want to keep bitching that my generation is whiny and entitled and why don’t we all just get jobs and stop complaining about student loans (but you won’t hire us)? Do you want to keep supporting candidates and companies that promote intolerance and hatred and deny your fellow human beings their basic rights? Do you want to tell me that my parents—an Army vet and loving, supportive mother and military wife—screwed up the American family by having me a bit earlier than planned?
You want to tell us — all of us — that we’re not legitimate. Our relationships aren’t legitimate, our jobs aren’t legitimate, our concerns are not legitimate.

You want to? Go right ahead. But we’re sick and tired of it. When you’re done spewing your hate, we’re going to have emotional reactions. And you want to know what’s great about having an emotional reaction to something that touches you deeply because you’re a decent human being? It’s fucking legitimate.

College hook-ups suck?

28 Sep

Not sure what your sexual experiences in college were, but we can relate to the thought that hooking-up kind of sucked sometimes? Especially when it came down to a win-lose, friends-with-benefits deal….

But don’t take our word for it. MTV breaks it down…..

Race, clothes and SlutWalks

28 Sep

A white woman, with the exception of prostitutes and some manual laborers, could be a “lady,” the model of respectability, modesty, and even sexual purity. A white woman can be labeled a slut on the basis of specific behavior, such as perceived promiscuity. But black women, stereotypically, can be considered sluts at any time, no matter what they do or wear.

HUMP DAY: Back-to-School Predictions (Yes, No, Maybe-So)

7 Sep

It’s the start of a new school year, and if you’re fortunate enough to still be a student, its basically the only way your brain processes a calendar. Its a new year, a fresh start.  You’ve got your new outfit picked out for the first day, you have plans to meet your best friend in your secret spot in the stacks and you’ve got your eye on the cute boy sitting diagonally across from you in Psych 4300 (you’re a smart cookie). Most importantly, you and your aforementioned bestie have already written out a year’s worth of predictions and goals for the year and you are gonna get-fucking-to-it.

I just moved into a new house with my biddie friends and we’ve got a list of predictions, too:

– Spend an entire day on the roof

– Host a beautiful outdoor gathering like something out of Kinfolk

– Have sex in the kitchen

…and many other things

Speaking of sex in the kitchen…here’s another list you should be checking out: Continue reading

Predictive Policing: Yay or Nay?

24 Aug

The New York Times recently published an article about a new trend emerging – predictive policing.  In
brief: a computer program has been developed and is being implemented
in Santa Cruz to predict locations and blocks of time where certain
crimes are most likely to occur.  It sounds like the system is
evidence based: that is to say, based on an input of data on crime
events in the city in the past, it spits out a sort of extrapolation
on what might happen in the future, and when.  And evidently, they
made an arrest utilizing that system already.  Continue reading

A couple weeks ago, Maureen brought our attention to a recent ad campaign from the folks at Got Milk? that was seriously troubling.

Shortly thereafter, the Funny Or Die peeps brought us a satisfying comeback with some precious parodies:

America approves of God’s performance

27 Jul

Public Policy Polling recently checked in with America to find out how we’re all feeling about the debt ceiling, Congress, Rupert Murdoch, and, oh yeah, GOD. It’s very important that we monitor our feelings about God, and see if everyone’s happy, and if they’re not, like, can we call the Pope? Or the Scientologists? And just be like, Hey, here’s how we’re feeling about the Big Man Upstairs these days, and maybe he didn’t get Public Policy Polling’s press release, or doesn’t’ read HuffPo, or something and you could tell Him for us?

So America, how are you REALLY feeling about what God’s been doing these days? Continue reading

HUMP DAY: Sex Scandals and Such

8 Jun

Listen, this Anthony Weiner business is ridiculous.

I make no bones about being an Anthony Weiner fan. I applauded him when he stood up for reproductive access. I cried with laughter at his Click and Clack impressions during his house speech defending NPR. Anthony Weiner was the kind of politician that I could get behind. He was real, he was witty, and he wasn’t afraid to call on people’s bullshit. Why am I saying “was” – he still is all of those things. Except that now he has been widely shamed for his poor decision making skills and has proved, very publicly, how real he actually is.

Let me start with saying that even though I was reallly hoping it wasn’t actually him doing the tweeting, I don’t have much of a problem with Anthony Weiner’s actions. Aside from the fact that he is married*, Weiner’s internet actions crossed no boundaries of the law, and the explicit conversations he was having were completely consensual – you can read some of the contents here:

Let’s Discuss: Rihanna’s New Video

2 Jun

(via email)

Tara: Have you guys seen this?

[Rihanna’s ‘Man Down’ video ‘inexcusable,’ parent group says – CNN.com]

Here’s the video:

Dawn: So I watched this yesterday. Honestly, I in no way condone violence, but this is a music video; a piece of performance art that is an interpretation of a musical work. I think it’s powerful.

In the Bad Romance video, Gaga is captured, bid on, and bought for sex by some group of skeezy guys. She burns him crispy with her fire bra thing at the end. I don’t remember a controversy around that?

HUMP DAY: Making Out

1 Jun

Ahhh…one of the human race’s favorite pastimes. Making out.

There’s a lot to be said about making out. There’s even tons of names for it! (Frenching, snogging, necking, tonsil hockey…) But no matter your race, age or creed, everybody loves a good make-out sesh. (Preferably hickey-free, amirite??)

There was the time your senior year of high school when you visited your friend at the university an hour away and made out with one of her friends on the football team and came home with your first hickeys ever. Your parents miraculously never noticed them? Then there was the time during your freshman orientation at your university where you spent an hour making out with a guy in the dorm hallway instead of bonding with your new friends. (But let’s be real, who stays close friends with the kids they meet at orientation?) You were busy bonding mouths with some tall guy. Continue reading
