Slutwalk. Coming to Your City.

18 Apr

If you haven’t already heard about the Toronto Slutwalk, you should definitely check out what some awesome Canadian ladies did on April 3. Basically, a Toronto police officer said that women could avoid being sexually assaulted by not dressing like “sluts.” Oh, hey there, rape culture, great to see you rearing your ugly face again. Not…

Ugh. So, in response to this, around 1000 people (ED NOTE: The actual number of participants was around 3000 people! See Slutwalk’s comment on our post below!) took to the streets to protest victim-blaming and the prevalence of rape culture. Self-proclaimed sluts and allies joined forces and have received attention from all over the place and even inspired satellite Slutwalks across the world! (Including DC…YES!)

Slutwalks have, of course, drawn criticism from places such as Fox News, but luckily, the lovely Mick Foley backed us up on why this is an important issue.

You know you want to get down and do the walk of shameful sluts. Check out the list of slutwalks around the world. If there’s one near you, you should go. Really. It’s a good cause, AND super fun. (We’re guessing here, but duh, you get to dress up if you want to. Doesn’t matter what you wear!)

And if there isn’t a slutwalk near you but you still really want to get involved (see previous parenthetical), organize one! It’s amazing what small groups of people can do to make a difference. (ED NOTE #2: Contact satellite@slutwalktoronto.com  to get organizing support from Slutwalk Toronto!)

In short:

Attention sluts & friends of sluts: Let’s speak out against rape culture every chance we get!

This post was brought to by Dawn who can’t wait to get her DC Slutwalk on.

    Hi Dawn,

Thanks for the props! Just wanted to let you know that there were, in fact, 3000+ people at SWTO, despite what the media will have everyone believe. We know this because we were told what 1500 people would look like on the lawn of Queen’s Park and it was twice as much as that.
Also, and more importantly, if people would like to start their own SlutWalk, we ask that they head on over to http://www.slutwalktoronto/satellite and check out our guidelines at the bottom of the page as well as contact me at satellite@slutwalktoronto.com so we can offer our official support.

      Jeanette,

You are more than welcome! Thanks so much for checking us out and for all that you’ve done to make this possible! So glad to see this taking off! Can’t wait for the DC event and let us know if there’s anything else we can do to help spread the word!

      -Dawn
